Designer of the Month: Ruth Broadway
February’s ‘Designer of the Month’ is Ruth Broadway. The majority of Ruth’s artwork consists of lino prints. She also creates illustrated products which include jewellery and homewares.
Ruth has obtained training as an artist-designer and illustrator and has worked in the industries of textiles, teaching and floristry. Ruth (along with other designers) has set up an independent shop called 'Paper Plane' in Bristol. Paper Plane allows the designers to exhibit and sell their work as well as the work of other artists.
The subject matter which Ruth chooses to focus on includes animals, birds, cameras, Frida Kahlo sugar skulls and glasses (she has a love of vintage glasses!). Inspiration for the artwork comes from 50’s and 60’s design, graphic poster art, museum curiosities and Scandinavian folk art. These influences have lead to interests in pattern and graphic line which can be seen throughout her art. Her pieces often have an element of humour to them due to her choosing amusing stories to focus the work on. A number of her prints are based on family members too.
