A Cup (apron or cotton bag) Full of Love For Mothering Sunday

I don’t know about you but it feels as though the year is flying by. It seems as though Santa only came yesterday and yet Mothering Sunday is now just around the corner on the 10thMarch. Nowdays Mothering Sunday is a flowery and chocolaty celebration of our mums; a day where we buy her gifts, do the housework so she doesn’t have to and just generally spend some quality time together. Suprisingly, this is a little removed from the origional purpose of the day.

In years gone by churchgoers would attend services in the parish church where they they lived. This church was known as the ‘daughter church’. However, it was expected that during simnel cakelent you would return to your home church or ‘mother church’ on mothering Sunday. On this day a lot of female servants would be given the day off in order to return home to visit their families. They would spend the day together, going to church and eating lots of lovely simnel cake, a traditional mothers day treat!

Due to large changes in religious habits and working patterns, Motheirng Sunday evolved into mothers day to accommodate a more modern society as well as to copy the mothers day trend started by the Americans in the early 1900’s. However, it still has very strong religious ties for catholic people who associate the day with the virgin Mary.

In the coming weeks a lot of children will be making cards and pasta covered calendars at school for their mums and grandmas. Some, with our help, will also be designing special mothers day mugs, aprons and cotton bags to further help their school fundraising efforts. Here are some of the mothers day designs we have printed for nurseries and schools in the past:
