Designer Of The Month: Sarah Young
We have featured a diverse range of impressive artists and designers as our Designer Of The Month over the past few months. This month we have chosen Sarah Young who is involved in printmaking, painting, design & illustration. Sarah started her journey into the arts when she collaborated on a travelling puppet theatre. This enabled her to use her entire range of skills, all of which she has continued to develop over the years.
Sarah has an impressive collection of many different types of artwork, including paintings, hand-cut linocuts, collagraphs, monoprints and dolls that are created from vintage and recycled materials. The dolls come in a wooden box with a glass front so that they can be displayed. Here at Stuart Morris we print Sarah’s beautifully-designed tea-towels, made out of 100% cotton. They come in a range of designs including “Felix the Fox”, “Oswald the Owl” and “Hester the Hare”.
We love how intricate and unique the design is. You can also follow the instructions on the tea towels and cut round the dotted lines, sew them up and stuff them to create unique soft toys. Some people also turn the tea-towels into cushions, or fill them with slightly heavier items so that they can be used as doorstops.
Sarah exhibits her art in many art galleries, most of which are in the South of England, as her studio is on the South Coast. Some of these include the Castor and Pollux in Brighton, The Eastern Rooms in the Rye Art Gallery in Sussex and the Julia Mills Gallery in Mousehole, Cornwall. If you live in the more Northern parts of England you will find Sarah’s work displayed in Hornseys in Ripon, Yorkshire.
“We started out as a very small traveling puppet theatre. In winter months we printed linocuts with the back of a wooden spoon and made all sorts of things out of papier mache. Now I mostly print, paint, illustrate and make, if I'm lucky all at the same time! The tea towels have been a lovely way of combining my 3 dimensional work and prints.”

If you would like to see some of Sarah’s fascinating illustrations, you can see them in the book ‘Greek Myths’, written by Ann Turnbull. This book contains seventeen famous Greek Myths, covering a variety of different topics and famous characters. If you are looking for designs that you won’t find anywhere else, you can pick up some of Sarah’s work at a real cinch considering how talented she is. Her unique tea towels cost around £10, and most of her fascinating collagraphs are under £200. When you see some of her excellent designs and artwork, you won’t be at all surprised that Sarah is our Designer Of The Month.
