Barra Through Stuarts Eyes

The Island of Barra, a Gaelic speaking isle in the Outer Hebrides, recently underwent a Stuart Morris makeover. Stuart loves to travel, he tells us that it is all in the name of art but we think that the sunshine and sandy beaches have something to do with it! His passion for painting has taken him to the Greek & Caribbean Islands, Peru, Turkey and even parts of Asia in the past but a couple of months ago he decided to head out to Barra. Over the years many artists have felt drawn to this magical isle and it is not hard to see why. The beaches are white and unspoilt by tower block hotels, the hills (Heaval and Ben Tangaval being the highest) are majestic and look out over the Atlantic and the Island history is colourful, with links to ‘Niall of the Nine Hostages’ a legendary Irish King.

Probably one of the most amazing things about Barra is the beach airport. Voted as the most stunning landing spot in the world, Barra Airport is the only airport in existence with regular scheduled flights that land on a beach and a timetable dictated by the tide!

Stuart spent a couple of days exploring deserted sandy beaches and adding his own brand of colour to the white, green and azure landscape. Here are some pictures of his rock and driftwood paintings from the trip.
